Popori Acoustics’ story began when Hungarian engineer Otto Popori began repairing electrostatic speakers in 1996. He recognized the common problems and limitations of electrostatic speakers such as limited bandwidth, large power requirements, and unreliability.

Based on his now vast experience, he set out to design an electrostatic speaker that eliminated these problems and in 2001 he created his first custom-built speakers that can faithfully reproduce all genres of music from any source – analog or digital.

Industrial designer Gabor Marko and craftsman Istvan Marko shared the dream to create a cutting-edge commercial electrostatic speaker free of the traditional limitations encountered by previous designs.

Technical design goals

• covers the entire audible spectrum, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz
• present an easy load for amplifiers; even with a 20 watt tube amp
• have sufficient output and dynamics to recreate a live listening experience, while also delicate and articulate enough to reproduce music at the volume of a mere whisper
• for the first time in the world, simultaneously reproduce bass and treble equally powerfully and of the highest fidelity
• enduring and reliable
• modular: extra bass modules or even full range modules can be added to fill larger spaces or in order to address dispersion in acoustically problematic spaces
• aesthetical and interior design friendly
• customisable; allowing for a wide range of color finish, materials, patterns

OSLO HIFI SHOW 2024 REPORT

This room stood out as a personal “best in show” even though we don’t do that here at HiFi PiG. This room belonged to Popori Acoustics and they have managed to create a full-range electrostatic speaker that goes down to 27Hz without any additional bass drivers.

The WR1 SE speakers have a 6-micron thick continuous foil driver, 90dB sensitivity and due to the single foil design, they do not require a crossover – only a transformer which is neatly hidden away in the foot of the stand. This brand deserves to be congratulated on doing something different – I heard these same speakers the next day playing some EDM and the amount of bass they can output without losing composure has to be heard to be believed – these are electrostatic speakers as you have never heard them before. – HiFi PiG
